יָד
yâd · yawd · noun · “hand, power”
Yad means hand — and in the Hebrew Bible, by extension, power, authority, and saving action. “The hand of the LORD” is a vivid picture of his work in the world.
Yad means hand, the body part — and from there, power, agency, and what someone does. To be “in the hand of” another is to be under their power.
The Old Testament loves the picture of God’s yad: a mighty hand bringing Israel out of Egypt, a sustaining hand upholding the righteous, an outstretched hand still pleading with a wayward people.
