Allos means “another of the same kind.” Jesus uses it of the Holy Spirit — “another (allos) Helper” — meaning a Helper just like him.

Greek has two words for “another”: heteros (another of a different kind) and allos (another of the same kind). The distinction shines in John 14:16.

There Jesus promises “another (allos) Helper.” The Holy Spirit is not a lesser substitute but another like Jesus — another divine person who comes to be with the church in his stead.
