Elijah

A bold prophet who confronted idolatry in Israel and was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind.

Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, where God answered with fire, proving the LORD is God. He also met God not in wind or earthquake but in a gentle whisper.

He did not die but was taken up in a chariot of fire, and his return was associated with the coming of the Messiah—fulfilled, Jesus said, in John the Baptist.
